The now retired dance teacher Lilian O’Moore recently collected a civic honour from the Mayor of Derry, Councillor Gerard Diver. The award was made in recognition of her contribution to the cultural and indeed social life of the city, not to mention her success in tutoring no fewer than five World Champions
…Lilian O’More has a host of prize-winning dancers in her ranks. Four of her pupils are now dancing teachers – Marie Barrett-Gallagher in Strabane, Finvola Lynch-Lyons in Carndonagh, her own daughter Michelle O’Donnell in Wales, Kathleen McConnell in Derry – and two are adjudicators, Vourneen and Marie Barrett- Gallagher.
Another well-known pupil, teacher and adjudicator, was the late Frankie Roddy, while Lilian reckons that five-times All-Ireland champion George Kilkie (also well-known on the accordion) would have given Michael Flateley a good run for his money!
George played the accordion and sung in the Doire Calgach group where he designed the club’s logo and uniform – this site has pictures of George and has some music being played by him.
