This page describes the wordpress plugin WP to TNG bridge and details its requirements and functionality.
The application TNG (The Next Genealogy) is developed by Darrin Lythgoe. It is a mature, extensible and reliable application for genealogists to store, maintain and display family tree(s) and their associated documents. It supports a community of users and also a community of extension developers (called MODS) who have extended the functionality and usability of the core progam. Often mods are created and then rolled into an upgrade if their function adds to the core functionality for all users. One inevitable limitation of TNG is that it does not attempt to be Jack of all trades and Master of none.
Many TNG users maintain a family history site for their family and combine the family tree in TNG with a Joomla or WordPress site which provides a more magazine style supplement.
Our plugin bridges a WordPress site with a TNG site with a single sign on to both sites and a password synchonisation from WP to TNG on sign on. This makes the WP site the owner of access to the combined site and allows users to only remember one logon and password.
Colin Stearman’s SSO for TNG did an excellent job of the tasks required but its functionality is blocked by hosting companies who refuse to allow one program to manage two MySQL databases from one application. Our plugin avoids this bottleneck but Colin’s may well resolve this bottleneck too.
The plugin works with the expectation that TNG and the WP application share the same domain name. Usually the TNG files are in a subdirectory of the domain but it could be the other way around. With TNG in the subdomain direct access can also be blocked.
