Why two different sites?
Kilkie.org is really two linked websites. One for stories and one for information about individuals and their ancestors.
- The Magazine or “family blog” is a WordPress site (like millions of other websites) .It contains stories about members of our family, places we live/have lived and interesting or infamous family members and their lives. WordPress is free but we need to pay a few beer tokens every year to get a company to “host” our site (currently IONOS).
- The family history with all the dates, places and events (births, deaths and marriages) is stored and organised inside a program called TNG (The Next Genealogical) Program, written by a brilliant US chap called Darrin Lythgoe and used by thousands of family historians around the world. TNG is not free but it almost is! It has cost a little more than £100 since I started using it around 10 years ago.
Both sites are registered to my company MKICT services, this is to stop anyone sueing any family members personally. It also covers our GDPR and other legal requirements.
Both websites are only available by going to Kilkie.org and logging in. If you try to go directly to the family tree (kilkie.org/tng) as you used to, you will be bounced over to Kilkie.org. This to keep the whole thing as secure as possible.
From the main site menu you choose where to go, including to the family history site. There is no charge now or ever for family users and only family users are allowed in. Everything inside is private!
All family members can change anything but if you are not confident you can email me and I will add/change things for you. The site is backed up automatically every night. Don’t worry, you can’t damage it!
Other items on this help menu will guide you in how to do anything. You can also email me anytime you want (martin.kilkie@gmail.com).
Enjoy!
