Pollokshaws

Pollokshaws is a district on the southside of the city of Glasgow. The housing stock mostly consists of some old and modern brick tenement-style buildings. According to the United Kingdom Census 2001 Pollokshaws has a population of 4,295. Pollokshaws was the first destination and residence for Kilkie family members in Scotland.

The first recorded Kilkie in Scotland were in the 1881 census. George Kilkie ( age 64) and three of his sons had separate household entries but all in Pollokshaws or Eastwood. As no Kilkie households were recorded in Scotland in 1871 it seems likely that the father George and his sons came over to Scotland/Pollokshaws sometime between 1871 and 1881. This late arrival is contradicted by the marriage of Thomas Kilkie to Janet McGhee in St Mary’s Church Eastwood on 27 April 1866, – perhaps they went back to Derry for the day of the census? The problem with using census data is that it only tells you where people were on a single day and people moved around a lot in real life. We suspect the Kilkies came to Glasgow around 1861-6.
