Glasgow

After Derry, Glasgow is the most connected city for the Kilkie family. Of the 300 known Kilkie family members more than 240 lived or were born in or near Glasgow.

Within Glasgow itself there are two main districts which are related to the family, Pollokshaws and the Gorbals. A wider spread in the 20th century still leads back to these two areas. More recent areas include Govan, Penilee and Castlemilk.

Although there are many many images that could be used to typify Glasgow - Macintosh, Kelvin Hall, Wiggly bridge, but  I have chosen what I think is the most typical view for Glasgow Kilkies, the Glasgow tenement. Old, sooty, shops on bottom floor, Close.glasgow coa

The Glasgow coat of arms was famous to all Glaswegians, being prominent on all school Jotters. School lessons included the teaching of the meaning behind the various symbols on the coat of arms, which all derive from St Kentigern (St Mungo).

There’s the tree that never grew,
There’s the bird that never flew,
There’s the fish that never swam,
There’s the bell that never rang
